Dupont Circle Apartment

This project involved three tiny 1960's apartments and an eraser. Our client assumed in asking us to combine the units that the result would be a series of more or less separate rooms adhering to the pattern of the original units. We proposed instead to create a flexible open plan that took advantage of the sixty-five foot window wall with views of Dupont Circle.

The open plan could, however, be made into discrete rooms through the use of a variety of sliding pocket doors that can be arranged in various configurations to define the bedrooms and kitchen. The rhythm of the demising walls of the original units is recalled in thick, sculpted walls of natural stucco, while walls dressed in two colors of venetian plaster and a black marble slab define the boundaries of the living areas and pull the eye through the layered spaces.
